Nikon Coolpix P5000 Major Features

  • 10.0 megapixel effective resolution

  • 3.5x Zoom-Nikkor lens with VR image stabilization: The Nikon Coolpix P5000 features optical lens shift Vibration Reduction (VR ) technology, originally developed for interchangeable lenses used in Nikon's SLR camera systems. Angular velocity sensors measure camera movement, calculate the amount of compensation required, and the VR lens unit instantly adjusts position to offset camera shake. Nikon's exclusive VR system provides the ability to shoot at shutter speeds as much as three stops slower without blurring the image, while also providing a clearer image on the LCD monitor.

  • The 2.5-inch 230,000-dot LCD monitor with anti-reflection coating makes the menus easier to read in bright sunlight.

  • The Coolpix P5000 lightweight body features a magnesium alloy front panel

  • Button design similar to Nikon DSLR's like the D40, D80, D200

  • ISO 3200 sensitivity: Fixed sensitivity settings up to ISO 3200* are available in Manual exposure mode. In Anti-Shake and High-Sensitivity modes, AUTO ISO control automatically selects the optimal sensitivity setting for the shot across a range up to ISO 800.
  • *ISO 3200 is available only for image sizes of 5M (2592 x 1944) or smaller.

  • Anti-Shake mode: A turn of the Mode dial activates High ISO and BSS (Best Shot Selector), in addition to VR, automatically setting the optimal ISO for steady results, and selecting the sharpest image from up to 10 sequential shots.
  •

  • Manual and Auto exposure control settings: Programmed Auto [P] mode automatically selects shutter and aperture settings for optimal exposure, while Shutter-priority Auto [S] lets the photographer select a desired shutter speed, setting the optimal aperture setting accordingly. Aperture-priority Auto [A] offers 10-step manual control over the aperture setting in 1/3EV increments to let the photographer decide depth of field, while the camera automatically adjusts the shutter speed to achieve optimal exposure. Manual [M] exposure mode gives the photographer full control over both the aperture and shutter speed settings.

  • Aselection of 16 scene-optimized Scene modes and seven different movie modes can be easily accessed via the Mode dial and high-resolution 2.5-inch LCD.

  • Compatibility with system-expanding accessories: The Nikon Coolpix P5000 is compatible with optional lens accessories, including the 0.67x Nikon Wide-angle Converter WC-E67 (24mm equivalent) and 3.0x Telephoto Converter TC-E3ED (378mm equivalent). A built-in accessory shoe supports the use of Nikon's advanced i-TTL flash control for external flashes, including the Speedlight SB-400, SB-600 and SB-800.
  • Nikon Coolpix P5000 with SB-400 Speedlight

  • The Coolpix P5000's new image optimization settings offer a choice of four colour filters for shooting with monochrome filter effects, as well as barrel distortion control, which can correct images when using the WC-E67 wide angle converter and display the corrected image in real-time on the LCD monitor.

  • The Coolpix P5000 features a selection of Nikon Image Innovation's, which provide the ability to improve image quality within the camera. The Face-priority AF** feature automatically detects and focuses on human faces in the frame, while In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically overcomes the red-eye effect sometimes caused by flash photography. Nikon's D-Lighting feature can rescue underexposed images or shots taken with too much backlight by creating a copy of the image and adding light and detail where necessary, while leaving properly exposed areas alone.

Nikon Coolpix P5000 Press Release

Nikon Coolpix P5000 with TC-E3ED 3x lens converter and UR-E20 adapter ring

Mississauga, ON, February 20, 2007 - Nikon Canada Inc. today introduced the Coolpix P5000, a compact digital camera offering advanced functions and intuitive operation sure to satisfy camera enthusiasts.

High performance and outstanding image quality are the hallmarks of the Coolpix P5000. Its 10.0 megapixel resolution gives users the power to capture the finest details, perform creative cropping and produce beautiful enlargements. The Coolpix P5000 incorporates 3.5x optical zoom capability with a 36-126mm Zoom-Nikkor lens (35mm equivalent), which proves to be equally useful when zooming in for tight compositions or zooming out to capture sweeping vistas.

Nikon's Vibration Reduction (VR) image stabilization technology enhances the shooting experience by counteracting the effects of camera shake in lower light, or when shooting unsteady subjects. Automatically activated upon start-up, VR also automatically stabilizes images displayed on the wide-viewing angle 2.5-inch LCD, making it faster to frame shots and capturethe intended moment, The benefits of VR image stabilization also extend to achieving smoother action in the movie shooting modes.

Extended light sensitivity range up to ISO 3200* opens new worlds of photographic opportunities by adding the power to shoot more effectively in lower light conditions, or to capture fast moving subjects. The Coolpix P5000's new image-processing engine, with enhanced noise reduction and an improved signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, preserves high image quality, even when shooting at higher ISO settings.

Logically placed for easy access, the P5000's buttons and controls simplify camera operation. The new Mode dial provides quick access to a selection of 16 scene-optimized modes and seven movie modes, as well as Anti-Shake and High-Sensitivity modes. The Mode dial also offers learning and advanced photographers a choice of Programmed Auto [P], Shutter-priority Auto [S], Aperture-priority Auto [A], and Manual [M] exposure modes for even greater control over camera operation.

The Coolpix P5000 is highly responsive, offering a swift start-up time and fast continuous shooting. The lightweight body features a magnesium alloy front panel, an optical viewfinder, a textured finish and comfortable new grip.

Compatibility with add-on system components further extends the creative possibilities presented by the Nikon P5000. Converter lens options include a Wide-angle Converter that realizes a focal length of 24mm (35mm equivalent), and a Telephoto Converter that extends the reach of the zoom to 378mm (35mm equivalent). The built-in accessory shoe supports the use of Nikon's advanced i-TTL flash control for external flashes, including the Speedlight SB-400, SB-600 and SB-800.

The Nikon Coolpix P5000 is packaged with Nikon's exclusive PictureProject software for easy transfer, organizing, editing and sharing of photos with family and friends. PictureProject software is powerful, yet exceptionally easy to use. The Coolpix P5000 will be available March 2007
