See our latest comparison of the Sony A100 with the Nikon D80 and the Canon Digital Rebel XTi.

June 6th, 2006.

Sony has jumped into the digital SLR camera market with today’s introduction of the Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 digital camera system. The Sony DSLR-A100 is designed to compete against the current industry leading digital SLR's from Nikon and Canon, like the Nikon D70s and the Canon Digital Rebel XT.

Compared to the 8.0 MP Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT and the 6.1 MP Nikon D70s, with its 10.2-megapixel image sensor, the Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 camera has the highest resolution available in its class (as of 06/06/06)

The new Sony DSLR-A100 system combines advanced SLR functionality with other Sony digital imaging innovations, including Sony's Super SteadyShot image stabilizer to compensate for possible camera movement, meaning that all compatible telephoto, wide-angle, standard and macro lenses are automatically image-stabilized.

The Sony DSLR-A100 also features an Anti-Dust "CCD shake" mechanism (and other dust prevention measures), a large 2.5 - inch 230,000 pixel LCD monitor and the ability to capture up to 3 frames per second in continous shooting mode limited only by the capacity of your memory card.

Considering that other sites have already published first look previews of the Sony Alpha DSLR-A100, we have concentrated instead on how the new Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 lines up against the main competition, specifically the Nikon D70s and the Canon Digital Rebel XT digital SLR's.

See how these popular digital SLR cameras compare below in our side by side feature comparison of the Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 versus the Nikon D70s and the Canon Digital Rebel XT.

Sony A100 compared to Nikon D70s and Canon Rebel XT Back View

Sony Alpha A100 Advantage

  • 10.2 megapixel resolution offers greater detail and potential for cropping into the image
  • Anti-Shake mechanism built-into camera. Approximately 2 to 3.5 stop decrease in shutter speed possible. You do not need to use a specific lens that offers vibration reduction as is the case with both the Canon Digital Rebel XT and the Nikon D70s.
  • Large 2.5 inch Clear Photo LCD Plus, 230,000 pixels with brightness adjustment
  • Utilizes both static-free anti-dust coating on the CCD filter and anti-dust vibration that automatically shakes the CCD to dislodge dust each time the camera is shut off.
  • 9 focus points
  • D range Optimiser (hardware based) feature for auto image enhancement and contrast optimization. Three settings include: Advanced / Standard and Off
  • Aggressive price point for a 10.2MP DSLR

Nikon D70s Digital SLR Advantage

  • 2nd generation and built on the success of the Nikon D70
  • 3D color matrix metering with 1,005-segment RGB sensor. Center-weighted: Weight of 75% given to 6, 8, 10, or 13-mm circle in center of frame (variable through custom functions). Spot: Meters about 1% of frame centered on active focus area
  • Broader metering range from EV 0 to 20
  • AF detection EV -1 to 19 EV
  • Custom tone curves can be created and loaded into the D70s
  • 1/500 sec flash sync
  • 25 Custom Setting Functions
  • Top LCD camera information panel for easy viewing of current camera settings
  • 1/8000 sec maximum shutter speed
  • 5 stop exposure compensation (+/-)
  • AF assist beam from lamp vs mutiple strobe from flash
  • Support for Nikon's wireless creative flash system with built in commander mode
  • Very good ergonomics with logical button and control layout - one handed operation possible
  • Two year warranty in Canada
  • Can use older Nikkor lenses same Nikon F mount (vast system accessories).
  • Up to 36 characters of alphanumeric text input is available with LCD monitor and multi-selector; stored in Exif header of image. Provide location information, copyright details etc.
  • High capacity battery system. 400 (flash 50%) - 2500 shots with Nikon EN-EL3a rechargeable battery
  • Menu system clear plain language and help menu (mini built-in instruction book)
  • The Nikon D70s kit package with the Nikkor AF-S DX 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED is the best kit lens for the dollar. Features Nikon's Silent Wave AF-S motor technology and durable design with metal lens mount

Canon EOS Rebel XT Advantage

  • 2nd generation built on the strength of the Canon Digital Rebel DSLR
  • Strongest built in flash with a Guide #13
  • Optional Canon BG-E3 vertical battery grip available. Can hold two NB-2LH batteries or 6 AA
  • Lightest and most compact camera design compared to the Sony A100 and the Nikon D70s
  • Uses Canon's Digic II processing technology
  • Offers Mirror Lock Up via Custom Function menu
  • Buying into a very expandable professional camera system with a large selection of excellent quality Canon lenses available
  • $100 mail in rebate on the EOS Digital Rebel XT kit, most economically priced and a very good value.
  • Very good high ISO performance with little "noise"
  • White Balance (WB) Fine tuning possible in Blue-Amber and/or Magenta-Green range

As can be seen from the above, each of these camera systems have their respective advantages. When looking at the Sony A100 DSLR, what stands out are the higher resolution sensor and the body intergrated CCD-based anti blur technology. In comparison, the D70s maintains superiority with its advanced metering, flash technology, handling and overall feature set. The Canon Digital Rebel XT is a solid performer in its own right, certainly the lightest and most compact, and with the current $100 mail-in rebate in Canada and the US offers a very good value.

In terms of which camera offers the better image quality we are waiting until we get our hands on a Sony A100 DSLR production unit to conduct an image quality comparison between the Sony A100, Nikon D70s and the Canon Rebel XT.
