Nikon Coolpix 8400 Press Release

Press Release, Sept 16th, 2004 - Nikon, the world leader in photography, today announced the newest member of the COOLPIX family, the COOPIX 8400 - a high-quality compact digital camera combining 8.0 effective megapixel performance, versatile 24-85mm (35mm equivalent) zoom capability, fast AF and a host of amazing features.

With a range of 24-85mm (35mm equivalent), the new Nikon COOLPIX 8400 offers exceptional wide-angle zoom capability, allowing you to capture an extensive range of subjects from landscapes to portraits. The COOLPIX 8400 is capable of macro shooting from as close as 3cm, enabling you to fill the screen with small objects with incredible detail. Packing an impressive 8.0 megapixels, the COOLPIX 8400 has the ability to produce images with amazingly high resolution. And printing with the COOLPIX is direct to your printer or PictBridge - eliminating the need for a PC.

The COOLPIX 8400 is also a "system" camera, offering a variety of optional lens converters and other accessories.

Fast autofocus makes it easy to capture unexpected moments, and the lightweight, high-strength magnesium body enables easy handling in all situations. The COOLPIX 8400 is both easy to hold and visually attractive due to its Nikon D-SLR-consistent design, adopted from one created by famed industrial designer Giorgetto Giugiaro* exclusively for Nikon.

The addition of a 134,000-dot Vari-Angle TFT LCD monitor makes it easy to compose shots from above the head, from the waist or other imaginative angles.

Nikon's exclusive D-Lighting automatically compensates for insufficient flash or excessive back lighting to obtain balanced exposure throughout the frame and can even be selected in Playback mode. And with Nikon's proprietary Red-Eye Reduction feature the new COOLPIX 8400 can automatically detect and correct red eye in-camera.

A range of recording file formats is offered with the COOLPIX 8400, supporting the capture of high-quality images. Compression-free recording is available in the form of RAW (NEF) and HI (TIFF-RGB). There's a selection of compression modes too, comprising JPEG EXTRA (approx. 1/2) offering a satisfying balance of quality and data efficiency, FINE (approx. 1/4), NORMAL (approx. 1/8) and BASIC (approx. 1/16).

With the continuous shooting capability of the COOLPIX 8400 your motion or action shots will capture the feel of the moment. You can also record TV-sized movies with sound at the smooth rate of 30 fps and use the digital compensation function to correct the effects of any movement that occurs while shooting. The COOLPIX 8400 can then be easily connected to a TV for sharing with family, friends and colleagues.

The COOLPIX 8400 is one of the most highly advanced models of the popular COOLPIX line. It is the first to offer TTL flash capability when used with external SB-800 and SB-600 Speedlights. It also features auto colour enhancement which, when combined with other high-end Nikon technologies accurately records, assesses and fine-tunes the colors within images to achieve results that are noticeably more attractive.

The creative potential of the new Nikon COOLPIX 8400 is unlimited when combined with a selection of optionally available converter lenses, including wide-angle converter lenses and telephoto converter lenses, one of which - the TC-E3PF - uses a Phase Fresnel (PF) lens created using unique Nikon production technology. While offering 3x magnification, Nikon's unique PF technology results in a significantly reduced weight and size. The TC-E3PF lens has dimensions that are truly pocket size.

The new Nikon COOLPIX 8400 is USB compatible and comes complete with Nikon's PictureProject software providing a range of possibilities for organizing and editing, and design capabilities for your images. The user-friendly interface features plug-in modules and communications functions. This exciting software from Nikon includes an auto-update component allowing for upgrades as new features evolve.
