Nikon
Introduces
The Nikon Coolpix S1
|
Surprisingly
slim, exceptionally stylish - the Nikon Coolpix S1 blends high
reliability with high-quality shooting for users of all levels
March 16th, 2005.
Nikon
has today introduced the Nikon Coolpix S1, an ultra slim compact
digital camera, featuring 5.1 megapixel resolution, a large
2.5-inch LCD monitor, and a 3x optical (35-105mm in
35mm terms) Nikkor
ED zoom lens.
According
to Nikon, the Coolpix S1 is the first in a new series of Coolpix
cameras where the "S" stands for "Style."
The Coolpix S1 features an attractive, sleek silver aluminum
exterior, and is very slim and compact (89.9 x 57.5 x 19.7mm).
The Coolpix
S1 features a "right-angled" optics system that lets
the zoom lens move through its entire range without protruding
from the camera body. The Coolpix S1 also comes with the same
selection of innovative features found in the recently announced
Nikon Coolpix
5900 and 7900.
Nikon's
exclusive D-Lighting function, for example, can be selected
in Playback mode - automatically compensating for insufficient
flash or excessive back lighting in order to obtain balanced
exposure throughout the frame.
Nikon's
proprietary Advanced Red-eye Reduction, on the other hand, has
the ability to automatically detect and correct red eyes in-camera
in most situations. The
new Face-priority AF feature automatically finds, then achieves
sharp focus on peoples faces.
Update,
May 17th, 2005: Our friends at Letsgodigital.org
have now posted a review of the Nikon Coolpix S1. Check out
their opinion here.

Nikon Coolpix S1
Press Release
Press
Release, March 16th, 2005
- Nikon Canada Inc. announces the new Coolpix S1,
the first in a new series of Coolpix cameras where
the "S" stands for "Style." The
Coolpix S1 features an attractive, sleek silver aluminum
exterior, and it's always super slim and compact (89.9
x 57.5 x 19.7mm). Its "right-angled" optics
system lets the zoom lens function throughout its
entire range without protruding from the camera body.
The heart of this optical system is the ED lens, which
ensures sharp, natural results. The Coolpix S1 also
comes with a selection of innovative features that
deliver smooth operation and high-quality results.
With
the advantage of 5.1-megapixel performance and a powerful
35-105mm 3x Zoom-Nikkor ED lens (35mm equivalent),
the Coolpix S1 achieves superior results and true-to-life
colour. Its impressively large, bright 2.5-inch LCD
monitor makes it easy to compose shots and play back
the results, so there's no need for a viewfinder.
Nikon has specially designed the Coolpix S1 for exceptionally
easy operation, with a Graphic User Interface (GUI)
that lets you select functions by name or icon, and
a handy HELP button that displays explanations for
functions on the main menu. You can also set the menu
to display all text in a choice of 12 languages.
The
Coolpix S1 is remarkably convenient. Nikon's innovative
design significantly reduces energy consumption so
you can take more shots per battery - up to 200 images
with an EN-EL8 Rechargeable Battery. You can enjoy
more time taking pictures and less time recharging.
Nikon's superior engineering also gives the Coolpix
S1 a high-speed start-up time and enables swift continuous
shooting at up to 1.8 frames per second so you'll
catch more of those fleeting photo opportunities.
A
range of unique Nikon features let users improve images
in-camera for better results when shooting in difficult
conditions. Users can select Nikon's exclusive D-Lighting
function in Playback mode. D-Lighting automatically
compensates pictures taken with excessive backlight
or insufficient flash, adding light and detail to
darker parts of images, while leaving areas with desirable
exposure exactly as they are.
As
its name suggests, Nikon's In-Camera Red-Eye Fix function
automatically detects the annoying red-eye effect
that can be caused by flash, then digitally corrects
it in-camera. The Coolpix S1 also features the clever
Face-priority AF function, which can detect human
faces in the frame then provide optimal automatic
focus for sharper, more satisfying portraits. The
Blur Warning function lets you know when an image
has been compromised by camera shake so you can recompose
and shoot again for better results.
Like
all the other cameras in the popular Coolpix range,
the Coolpix S1 offers up to 17 handy Scene Modes that
make it easy to get pleasing results in common situations.
The user can simply select the mode - Sunset, Portrait,
Landscape or Underwater - or simply leave the camera
to automatically select the best settings.
Although
the Coolpix S1 offers the convenience of compatibility
with widely available SD memory cards, it also has
12MB of internal memory, which means users can go
on shooting without additional media. The \Coolpix
S1 can record movies with sound. It offers a choice
of four movie modes and connects easily to a TV so
you can view the results.
The
\Coolpix S1 comes complete with the COOL-STATION MV-11.
Delivering true plug-and-play convenience, the COOL-STATION
MV-11 is more than just a charging cradle - it lets
you charge the batteries without removing them from
the camera body. The COOL-STATION MV-11 also connects
the Coolpix S1 to a TV and to a computer via USB.
Printing
is easy with the Coolpix S1. Its PictBridge compatibility
lets users connect directly to a compatible printer,
without the need for a computer. It also comes complete
with Nikon's PictureProject software, which makes
it easy to edit, organize and share images.
Availability
This camera is scheduled for release in Spring 2005.
All

Coolpix cameras are ready to go right out of the box.
All essential accessories, including rechargeable
battery, A/V and USB cables, AC adapter and Nikon's
