Nikon D40X Digital SLR Tested with AF-S DX 18-135mm ED-IF
and AF-S DX 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6G VR IF-ED Zoom Lens

March 19th, 2007

Today we have published a series of sample images taken with a final production version of the new 10 megapixel Nikon D40X digital SLR, the recently announced big brother to the 6.1MP Nikon D40.
We tested the Nikon D40X with the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED kit lens and the new Nikkor AF-S DX 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6G VR ED telephoto lens.

We found the Nikon D40X digital SLR to be very user friendly and a real joy to use. The large bright viewfinder is a nice feature, and the camera's controls and menus are well laid out and easily accessible.

In most situations the Nikon D40X can be left in automatic / default modes with confidence. Ideal for more novice users. For those that desire more creative control the Nikon D40X offers custom options for setting exposure, image processing and autofocus modes. The Nikon D40X Retouch Menu is also a handy feature that allows for some convenient quick edits in camera (same as the Nikon D40 and D80).

One of the main advantages of the Nikon D40X compared to the Nikon D40 is that the Nikon D40X offers a higher 10 megapixel resolution sensor versus the 6.1 megapixel sensor found in the Nikon D40. The benefit is that with the D40X you have the ability to crop substantially into the image and still have lots of detail to produce a decent print.

If you choose not to crop the image you have the option of being able to print at very large print sizes when shooting with the Nikon D40x digital SLR in JPEG Fine or RAW (NEF) mode.

The Nikon D40X feels comfortable to handle and hold. The compact size and light weight makes it a good travel companion. In terms of image quality the Nikon D40X delivered very good and consistent results in our tests.

The Nikon D40X did a very good job while simply set to the basic Program fully automatic mode, the setting that will probably be used most often by the intended entry level digital SLR photographer. See our Nikon D40X digital SLR image samples below.
