Nikon D2X offers excellent response with the same quick power up and 37ms release time lag as the Nikon D2H
With rapid power up and short release time lag, the Nikon D2X offers the same high-speed performance as that found with the Nikon D2H, and allows the photographer to concentrate on capturing the decisive moment.

Nikon D2X Magnesium Internal Body Construction

A body designed with emphasis on ease of operation, durability and water-resistance

The Nikon D2X body design, while similar to that of the Nikon D2H, has been optimized for easy operation with emphasis on the convenient placement of camera buttons. The durability and water-resistance of the Nikon D2X, however, doesn't end with the body. Internal mechanisms such as the shutter unit and mirror balancer have also been designed for the maximum durability required of professional cameras.

The same level of precision found with the Nikon D2H with the same 11-area AF system, ambient light sensor and 1,005-pixel RGB sensor adopted
The Nikon Multi-CAM2000 11-area AF sensor, the ambient light sensor that improves white-balance precision, and the 1,005-pixel RGB sensor that improves exposure have all been adopted with the Nikon D2X.

Focus is achieved through TTL phase detection using a Multi-CAM2000 AF module (the same module used in the Nikon D2H). The Nikon D2X uses a wide-area autofocus system with a total of eleven focus areas; the subject is tracked vertically and horizontally using nine focus areas arranged in a cross.

Four AF-area modes are available that allow the user to choose among the 11 AF areas according to shooting conditions:

  • Single-area AF: The user selects the focus area manually, and the camera focuses on the subject in the selected focus area only. Use for relatively static compositions with subjects that will stay in the selected focus area.

  • Dynamic-area AF: The user selects the focus area manually, but the camera uses information from multiple focus areas to determine focus. If the subject leaves the selected focus area even briefly, the camera will focus based on information from other focus areas (the focus area selected in the viewfinder does not change). Use when following erratically moving subjects and in other situations in which it is difficult to keep the subject in the selected focus area.

  • Group dynamic-AF: The user chooses from focus area groups at the center, top, bottom, left, and right of the frame. The camera focuses on the subject at the center of selected group; if the subject leaves focus area even briefly, the camera will focus based on information from other focus areas in the same group. Use when the subject is moving erratically but its place in the overall composition is known.

  • Dynamic-area AF with closest subject priority: The camera automatically selects the focus area containing the subject closest to the camera, preventing out-of-focus shots when photographing erratically moving subjects. The focus area can not be selected manually, and focus areas are not displayed in the viewfinder or top control panel. The camera may be unable to select the focus area containing the closest subject when a telephoto lens is used or the subject is poorly lit. Single-area AF is recommended in these cases.

The Nikon D2X supports mounting of the SB-800 and SB-600 Speedlights for Nikon's Creative Lighting System compatibility

When used in combination with the SB-800 or SB-600 Speedlights, the D2X supports the Nikon's Creative Lighting System using i-TTL flash control, and functions such as FV Lock and Auto FP High-Speed Sync. With Speedlights such as the SB-80DX and SB-50DX mounted, the D2X also supports D-TTL flash control.

Advanced Wireless Lighting: Advanced Wireless Lighting is used to control multiple remote SB-800 or SB-600 Speedlights. i-TTL flash control is available for auto flash control; other flash modes available include auto aperture and manual.

Speedlights can be placed in up to three groups (A, B, and C), with each group controlled separately by the master Speedlight on the camera. Flash compensation (±3 EV) and flash mode (i-TTL, auto aperture, or manual) can be set separately for each group. Remote Speedlights can be used when the master Speedlight is off.

In addition to DX Nikkor lenses, the Nikon D2X also supports more than 50 various AF Nikkor lenses.

In addition to an expanding line of DX Nikkor lenses designed specifically for Nikon digital SLR cameras, most conventional AF Nikkor film-camera lenses can also be mounted on the D2X.

Support for the Wireless Transmitter WT-1/1A and the new IEEE802.11b/g compatible WT-2/2A for transferring image files directly from the D2X over a wireless LAN
In addition to the WT-1/1A, which expanded the possibilities in photography, the D2X also supports the new high-speed, IEEE 802.11b/g standard for faster transfer speeds and is equipped with an auto-delete feature that deletes files automatically after transfer. It can also be used to control the camera remotely (requires Nikon Capture 4 version 4.2 or later, available separately).

With improved functions, Nikon Capture 4 has become a must for the professional photographer. To correspond with the release of the Nikon D2X, Nikon Capture 4 has been upgraded to version 4.2 offering further improvements in image processing speed and functions, as well as new technologies that make Nikon Capture 4 easier to use. In addition, Nikon Capture - Camera Control can now be used to control the camera from a computer over a USB connection or a wireless LAN (requires Wireless Transmitter WT-2/2A).

Creating secure interface with a memory card

The Nikon D2X marks a world first by supporting a new function of secure interface between the user's CompactFlash card and digital camera. Once configured, the stored content on the card can only be accessed by a designated Nikon D2X digital camera with the matching encryption keys or via password access on a PC, providing the highest level of security for photographers who document confidential or classified information. This new function will only be available with the D2X when used with Lexar's specific memory cards to be developed together with D2X.
