August 19th, 2009

Canon has today announced a number of new PowerShot digital cameras, among them the prosumer PowerShot G11.

The Canon PowerShot G11 is a successor to the PowerShot G10. The Canon PowerShot G11 follows the design of the PowerShot G10, although the resolution has been reduced to 10.0 megapixels compared to 14.7 MP for the G10.

With the new sensor, Canon is promising the PowerShot G11 will offer substantially improved image quality over the Canon G10, especially when using higher ISO sensitivities.

The PowerShot G11 incorporates a new 2.8-inch tilt and swivel LCD high resolution screen (461K dots) , and now also provides an HDMI output for high definition connectivity.

Canon PowerShot G11 Digital Camera Major Features

• High-sensitivity 10.0 MP sensor: The Canon PowerShot G11 is dramatically more sensitive than cameras with identical megapixel counts, and delivers high quality images with minimal noise. Increased sensitivity demands a higher ISO speed, and the PowerShot G11 delivers with a new maximum setting of ISO 3200.

In addition, a new Low Light mode lets you capture images in a wide range of lighting conditions. The camera automatically adjusts the ISO speed from ISO 320 to ISO 12800 in relation to ambient brightness, subject movement and camera shake.

• Wide-angle lens: The PowerShot G11 is a highly versatile camera with a wide-angle zoom lens that reaches all the way from 28mm at the wide end to 140mm at the telephoto end (35mm format equivalent). Canon's optical Image Stabilizer counteracts the effects of camera shake, for blur-free images throughout the zoom range.

• 2.8-inch vari-angle LCD monitor: A 2.8-inch PureColor II VA LCD (461K dots) lets you frame and shoot comfortably from any angle. Night Display and Quick-Bright functions allow detailed image review in all conditions. An optical viewfinder offers extra framing choice.

• Dual Anti-Noise System with DIGIC 4: Working with the high-sensitivity image sensor, Canon's DIGIC 4 processor delivers vastly improved noise performance across the ISO range. Shoot full-resolution images up to ISO 3200, or expand to ISO 12800 in (2.5MP) Low Light mode.

• iSAPS Technology is an entirely original scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the advanced DIGIC 4 Image Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.

• Take control: For total creative control, the PowerShot G11 features Full Manual mode. RAW shooting gives you complete control during post-shoot editing; and with support for Canon's Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software, digital SLR users can integrate the PowerShot G11 into their existing workflow.

The Canon PowerShot G11's RAW mode lets you shoot images without JPEG compression. It gives you clearer images and complete creative control in editing. RAW images are transferred directly to the computer where they can then be edited using image adjustment software or a processing application to adjust your images as you please. The camera can also be set to allow the simultaneous recording of both RAW and JPEG images while shooting.

• Smart Auto and Shooting Modes: Smart Auto mode analyses subject brightness, contrast, distance, hue and movement. Intelligent Scene Detection Technology then selects from 22 scene types, applying the best settings for optimum output. 27 dedicated shooting modes include Quick Shot and VGA movies.

• Intelligent technologies: A new Face Self-Timer automatically detects an increase in the number of faces and makes the appropriate adjustments. For instance, to include a photographer's face in a group shot, there's no need to rush in. Just put the camera on a stand or tripod, select the Face Self-Timer, and the camera will wait for the photographer's face to get on-camera before it takes the shot.

Motion Detection on the Canon G11 now tracks moving subjects in a much larger range, and the new Servo AF retains focus on a moving subject after the shutter button is pressed halfway - allowing you to wait for the perfect shot without refocusing. Also, Face Detection and Motion Detection are markedly improved according to Canon.

• i-Contrast: In shooting or playback, enhanced I-Contrast optimises dynamic range according to the scene- retaining detail in shadows and preventing overexposure of highlights. The result is natural images with the best possible contrast.

Canon Powershot G11 supplied accessories

• The Canon PowerShot G11 comes supplied with the following accessories: Rechargeable Lithium battery pack NB-7L, Canon battery charger CB-2LZ, neck strap, Digital Camera Solution CD-ROM disk, a USB interface cable and an AV cable.

• HDMI terminal: An HDMI mini output terminal lets you display still shots on any HDMI compatible TV without loss of quality.

• Optional Accessories: The PowerShot G11 is compatible with the Canon Speedlite flash series intended for all EOS series SLR cameras. Attach a Speedlite flash to the hot shoe, then you can set and control the flash on the "Flash Control" menu in the camera.

With a Canon Speedlight attached, the PowerShot G11 is given extra functions such as autoflash metering, FE lock and Flash exposure compensation; and continuous shooting with external flash.

Canon's optional Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2 enables you to even have multiple slave flashes and wireless control with the G11.

Scheduled to be available in October, the Canon PowerShot G11 is expected to retail in Canada for an estimated price of $599.99 (CAN). The retail price in the US is expected to be $499.99 (US)
