The AF-S DX 10-24mm zoom is optimized for Nikon DX format digital SLR cameras, and is designed for capturing landscapes, cityscapes, interiors, architecture and large group shots among others. The Nikkor AF-S DX 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED lens incorporates Nikon's AF-S Silent Wave Motor (SWM) technology, offering fast, accurate and quiet autofocus operation. Two ED glass elements assist in minimizing chromatic aberration. The lens renders a picture angle of 109° through 61°, equivalent to focal lengths of 15-36mm in Nikon FX or 35mm formats. To show the extra wide-angle coverage this lens is capable of offering, we took an image with the Nikon AF-S DX 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED zoom at its widest 10mm focal length setting and compared it with an image of the same subject taken from the same position with the lens set to 18mm coverage. The results are seen below. Click on the links to download larger image sizes.
As can be seen, the Nikon AF-S DX 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED provides considerably more wide angle field of view at 10mm compared to the widest 18mm coverage offered by Nikon's standard zoom lenses like the AF-S DX 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G IF ED and the AF-S DX 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED Nikkor. We tried out the Nikkor AF-S DX 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED zoom lens in combination with the Nikon D90 digital SLR in all our tests.
Nikkor AF-S DX 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Zoom: Sample Test Image #2 Incorporating two aspherical lens elements the Nikon AF-S DX 10-24mm Nikkor handles distortion well for this type of ultra wide angle lens. The above image was captured with the Nikon D90 in Aperture priority exposure mode at 1/800 sec, f/8 and -0.3 EV, ISO set to 200, Auto White Balance (AWB) and using Normal image processing.
Nikkor AF-S DX 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Zoom: Sample Test Image #3 The Nikon AF-S DX 10-24mm lens features an ED lens design to minimize chromatic abberation (sometimes seen as purple frindges around highlights, especially with less expensive lenses). Chromatic abberation becomes a non issue when the lens is used with newer Nikon digital SLR cameras, like the Nikon D300, D90 and the D5000, which feature a built-in automatic chromatic abberation correction function to further improve results. Nikon D90 shooting information for the above image: Aperture priority exposure mode at 1/800 sec, f/8 and -0.3 EV, ISO set to 200, Auto White Balance (AWB) and using Normal image processing. The Nikon AF-S DX 10-24mm f/.5-4.5G ED zoom was set to 24mm coverage. Conclusion: The Nikon AF-S DX 10-24mm f/.5-4.5G ED zoom lens performed very nicely in our tests and is a quality constructed lens that is comfortable to handle and use. With a focal length coverage from 15-36mm in 35mm terms, the Nikon AF-S DX 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED zoom is a versatile lens that serves its purpose well. If you are looking for an ultra wide angle lens to go with your Nikon DX format digital SLR, we would definately recommend the Nikon AF-S DX 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Nikkor zoom lens as a good solution. |
