Nikon AF-S DX 35mm F/1.8 G Lens Review

Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm F/1.8 G front

November 11th, 2010: The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G lens is a fast fixed focal length lens designed for use with Nikon DX format SLR cameras. When attached to a Nikon digital SLR camera with a DX size sensor, the lens offers the approximate equivalent of a 50mm field of view in 35mm (full frame) terms.

The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm F/1.8 G presents itself as ideally suited for applications such as low light, scenic landscape and fine art photography. With a fast f/1.8 maximum aperture the lens offers users the ability to shoot for shallow depth of field or be able to achieve higher shutter speeds than would be possible under the same conditions with a slower aperture kit lens attached.

The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm F/1.8 G lens provides a solid feel, and incorporates an AF-S type auto focus motor for quieter and faster focusing. Although it is not as rugged as some of the other lenses in the Nikkor lens line up, the Nikon AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8 G is a well built lens considering the attractive price point.

The lens mount is made of metal and features a rubber seal to help minimize dust from entering the camera. The AF-S DX 35mm F/1.8G does not offer a focus scale information window like some other Nikkor lenses.

The lens offers a wide manual focus ring making it comfortable to use, and the front of the lens does not rotate when focusing making it more suitable for using filters like circular polarizers.

While the difference in optical quality provided by the Nikon AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8G versus the standard Nikon AF-S DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR kit lens is not quite as noticable at smaller image sizes, the enhanced sharpness and resolution provided by the Nikon AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8G prime lens becomes very obvious when the images are compared side by side at full size as seen below.

Nikon AF-S DX 35mm F/1.8 G Lens: Major Features

  • Sharp image quality (noticably sharper than Nikon AF-S DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 VR kit lens)

  • Focus as close as .30 meters (.98 ft)

  • 52mm non rotating filter thread for attaching optional filters

  • HB-46 bayonet lens hood and CL-0913 soft case supplied

  • The lens weight is 200g and the dimensions are 70mm x 52.5mm (Diameter x Length)

  • Nikon HB-46 lens hood and CL-0913 soft case supplied

We have no hesitation in recommending the Nikon AF-S DX 35mm F/1.8G prime lens as a great solution for travel, scenery, low light and all around general purpose photography. The sharpness and image quality exceeds the capabilities offered by a standard zoom lens like the AF-S DX 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6G VR.

The included lens hood and soft case are an added bonus, considering these accessories are often considered optional with other lenses on the market.

As a practical tool for many different types of photographic opportunities (as well as shooting HD video) and considering the very respectable image quality that is offered, we feel that the Nikon AF-S DX 35mm F/1.8G Nikkor provides very good value for the money.
