At
the 2009 Photo Marketing Association (PMA) Convention held
in Las Vegas early last month, the rumours were already swirling
that Canon would soon be unveiling something new and "exciting"
in the Digital SLR arena. A few weeks later on March 25th
Canon confirmed the speculation and introduced the Canon Rebel
T1i digital SLR camera (story below). As of today, the 12.1MP
Nikon D90 SLR is the closest competitor to the Canon Rebel
T1i / EOS 500D. The Nikon D90 is the first digital SLR camera
to feature an HD movie recording option. Since its introduction
last year, the Nikon D90 has quickly become one of the best
selling enthusiast oriented SLR cameras on the market and
has earned a reputation as the king of the hill in its category.
Canon has now responded to the success of the Nikon D90 by
introducing and positioning the Canon Rebel T1i into the same
class at a slightly lower price point. How does the Rebel
T1i compare to the Nikon D90? Check out our Canon Rebel T1i
/ EOS 500D versus Nikon D90 side by side comparison review...

Dec
6th. If you are looking for a new entry level digital
SLR camera, two of the more popular models are the Nikon D60
and the Canon Digital Rebel XS (named EOS 1000D in some countries).
Both cameras feature 10 megapixel resolution. To see how these
two cameras compare we have completed a side by side review
of the Nikon D60 and the Canon Digital Rebel XS / 1000D. We
focused our attention on testing the cameras with their available
standard kit lenses which tends to be the most popular configuration
among buyers. We used the Nikon D60 with the Nikon AF-S DX
18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR zoom lens and the Canon EOS Rebel XS
with the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens. We have

We
recently had the opportunity to test out the new Nikon GP-1
GPS positioning device, a Nikon digital SLR accessory which
provides a Geotagging feature when connected to
a supported camera. By tagging your photos with geotags you
will not be left wondering down the road "Where was that
picture taken?" The Nikon GP1 works by receiving signals
from a number of satellites in space. Through triangulation,
the camera will know where it is on the surface
of the Earth and record the latitude and longitude and altitude
in the meta data on pictures. Once the GPS data is stored,
images can be plotted on a map in Nikon View NX software or
on-line at myPicturetown.com, as well as many other programs
and web sites.

Canon
Canada Inc. has recently notified retailers that the soon
to be released
Canon EOS 5D Mark II
digital SLR (the Canon
EOS 5D replacement)
has been subject to a price increase effective immediately.
The new manufacturer's recommended retail price (MSRP) for
the Canon EOS 5D Mark II full frame digital SLR is now $3099
CAN.
See latest EOS
5D Mark II street price (Canada). When
the Canon EOS 5D Mark II was announced back
in September,
Canon Canada Inc. indicated that the MSRP of the Canon EOS
5D Mark II would be $2799 Canadian. As
we indicated in an article last week discussing the current
currency volatility, the
move does not come as a complete surprise. "..with
the wild swing in the Canadian dollar over the past year,
increasing to an all-time high of $1.10 in November 2007,
and then dropping to a low of 77.59 cents (US), over time
most products that are imported will go up in price if the
dollar stays low"..."already some camera suppliers
have warned that they will have to raise prices in mid-November
if the loonie (Canadian dollar) remains weak". The question
for those customers that have already placed local pre-orders
for the Canon EOS 5D Mark II is whether the original pre-order
price will be honoured. From what we have heard, some retailers
have already contacted customers to advice them that if they
want to keep their pre-order for the Canon EOS 5D Mark II
they will be subject to paying the new higher price. We recommend
to also check out and compare the
lower price on the Canon EOS
5D DSLR body (Pricegrabber US$)

and then late today dropping to a low of 77.59 cents (US),
over time most products that are imported will go up in price

that Canadian distributors will do much to change prices before

inventories were purchased when the dollar was stronger. If
the dollar remains low however, importers will be forced to
raise prices to cover the rising cost of goods bought in US
dollars...

With
the announcement of the new 15.1 MP Canon EOS 50D and the
12.3 Nikon D90 enthusiast digital SLR cameras coming on almost

debate) happening among photographers within the Canon and
Nikon communities. The Canon EOS 50D is a worthy update to
the 10.1 MP Canon EOS 40D and the new Nikon D90 takes a big
leap forward compared to the 10.2MP Nikon D80. Photographers
making their way up from a digital point and shoot type of
camera (and the Youtube crowd) will undoubtedly be attracted
by the appeal of also being able to record D-Movie 720p HD
clips with sound when using the Nikon D90. The basis of this
side by side comparison overview between the Nikon D90, D300,
D80 and Canon EOS 50D is to hopefully help make the buying

Nikon
has today officially introduced the 12.1 MP Nikon D700 FX

comes as no surprise to those who visit the online photography

images
of the copy layout complete with Nikon D700 product images

major advancements in performance and design that were first
introduced with the Nikon D3 and D300
have been incorporated in the D700 along with a few differentiating
features and functionality...

We
have just posted a Nikon Coolpix P80 sample image gallery
with a number of test shots taken under a variety of conditions
and representing a wide range of subject matter. Having spent
the past couple of weeks shooting with the Coolpix P80 and
its long range 18x optical zoom, in our experience it is a
camera that is capable of delivering very good image quality
all things considered. The Nikon Coolpix P80 does suffer somewhat
in terms of speed of performance (AF lock), and the auto focus
had a tendancy to occasionally hunt at the upper end of the
zoom range. Nevertheless, the Coolpix P80 offers an ergonomically
well designed compact package with a user friendly layout
of controls and buttons and an intuitive plain language menu
system. Overall we found the Coolpix P80 great fun to use
and offering lots of creative versatility with good image
quality. Check out our sample images... See

May

At
this year's annual Photo Marketing Association trade show,
which was held in Las Vegas from Jan 31st to Feb 2nd, a number
of new digital SLR cameras were introduced incorporating the
latest advanced technologies for 2008. The manufacturers have
been busy spreading the word that these new SLR cameras feature
today's "must have" digital SLR technologies, including;
higher resolution sensors, larger LCD screens, advanced Live
View modes, expanded dynamic range options and more. One of
the cameras to stand out from the crowd and getting a fair
amount of attention is Sony's first mid range digital SLR,
the 14.2MP Sony Alpha A350 with unique Quick AF Live View.
To see what real world benefits the latest generation technologies
and features incorporated in the Sony Alpha A350 offer in
terms of image quality or enhancing the photographic experience,
we decided to compare this new camera model against the popular
10.1 megapixel Nikon D80 digital SLR. The Nikon D80 remains
one of the predominant cameras in the current Nikon line up
even though it was first introduced to the market in 2006.
Note: Most of our comparison findings apply equally to the
Sony Alpha A300 SLR, essentially a 10 megapixel version of
the Sony A350 with a lower price point. So check out the review,
see what we liked between these two cameras and also some
concerns... See
