the Nikon Coolpix 8400, a digital camera featuring 8 megapixels
of effective resolution and a versatile 24-85mm (35mm equivalent)
zoom capability, fast AF, and a number of other new features.
The
Nikon Coolpix 8400 is the first in the industry to be equipped
with a built-in 24-mm wideangle lens. With
a focal range of 24-85mm in 35mm terms, the Coolpix 8400 offers
an impressive wide-angle zoom capability, allowing you to capture
a wide range of subjects from landscapes to portraits.
With
the optional
new Nikon optical
lens converter WC-E75
(.x75), the Nikon Coolpix 8400 offers wideangle lens coverage
equivalent to an 18mm lens in 35mm terms. (Architecture, Landscapes,
Interiors)
The
Coolpix 8400 also allows macro shooting from as close as 3cm (1.2
inches), enabling the user to fill the screen with small objects
with fine details.
The Nikon Coolpix
8400 becomes one of the most advanced models in the Coolpix line.
Along with the simultaneously announced Nikon
Coolpix 8800, the Coolpix 8400 offers TTL flash
capability when used with Nikon's external SB-800 and SB-600 Speedlights.

magnesium alloy body. The camera's ergonomic design and style
come from famed industrial designer Giorgetto GIUGIARO (Same as
Nikon D2H, D70)

New Controls Dials
The Coolpix 8400 features a convenient mode dial on the top of the
camera (similar to Coolpix 5400), with settings for manual
exposure control modes (P,
S, A, M), Scene,
Movie, Setup, Image Quality, ISO, White Balance (WB) and Playback
options.

The Coolpix 8400
also features a multi selector pad on the back of the camera. The
multi selector is used to navigate through the camera menus.

Nikon's exclusive image processing technology provides natural color
reproduction, detail and gradation. The Coolpix 8400's 256-segment
Matrix Metering system helps ensure ideal exposures in even the
most challenging lighting conditions. For added control, the Coolpix
8400 also offers Center-Weighted, Spot, and Spot-AF area metering.
LCD
Monitor and Electronic Viewfinder (EVF)
The Nikon Coolpix 8400 offers a 1.8-inch-type, 270° Vari-angle
LCD monitor with 134,000 pixels, which makes it easy to view and
compose shots from above the head, from the waist or other imaginative
angles. A 5 step brightness adjustment is available for different
viewing conditions.

Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) provides high resolution for greater
contrast and clearer image display. There is a diopter adjustment
dial available: -3 to +1m
Exposure control
The Nikon Coolpix 8400 offers a variety of exposure control options,
including: Programmed Auto (P), Shutter-Priority Auto (S), Aperture-Priority
Auto (A), and Manual (M), as well as exposure compensation ( ±2
EV in 1/3 EV steps ), and auto exposure (AE) bracketing.
Scene Modes
For ease of use, the Coolpix 8400's Scene shooting mode offers a
menu of fifteen "Scenes", each corresponding to a common
situation, such as a backlight subject, sunset or interior shot.
Simply select
the mode appropriate to your lighting conditions, and the camera
will automatically adjust the aperture, shutter speed, focus, flash,
contrast, sensitivity and white balance.
